<p dir="auto" style="color: #3a383f; margin: 0px 0px 1rem;" align="initial">The RTEMS project would very likely be much better off having the DCO and sign-off requirement in place in the event of a lawsuit in the future than it would without them. The recommendations from the Linux Foundation were almost certainly developed based on competent legal advice by people who do understand open source projects without commercial connections.</p>
<p dir="auto" style="color: #3a383f; margin: 0px 0px 1rem;" align="initial">I don't see adding these as requiring any more work from the RTEMS maintainers than you're already doing — you can already connect an MR's author to the email address attached to their GitLab account. The DCO and sign-off also connect them to a legal admission that the author believes they're allowed to give you this code for redistribution. Yes that email might change but it may still be traceable, and if it doesn't that's fine.</p>
<p dir="auto" style="color: #3a383f; margin: 0px;" align="initial">In the event of a lawsuit, you would be able to give all this information to your lawyers for them to do any tracing that would be needed to defend the suit. I'm sure the Linux kernel organization doesn't trace contributors when someone emails a patch to lkml, or when Linus merges one. If you don't have the DCO and sign-off though you're missing the part that says the person who provided the code also accepted legal responsibility for it at the time of submission, so your legal position isn't as strong as with it.</p>
