<p dir="auto" style="color: #3a383f; margin: 0px 0px 1rem;" align="initial">I think the big difference between a DCO and the terms are, that you accept the DCO with every commit. You accept the terms only once. And I'm not even sure whether the terms are still the same as the one that I accepted during registration because I don't see a history or a date in the terms. If there is a copy of the DCO in the repository, it's entirely clear which one I accepted with a commit.</p>
<p dir="auto" style="color: #3a383f; margin: 0px 0px 1rem;" align="initial">A bit off-topic: I checked the <a href="https://gitlab.rtems.org/-/users/terms" style="margin-top: 0px;">https://gitlab.rtems.org/-/users/terms</a> and compared it with <a href="https://developercertificate.org/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">https://developercertificate.org/</a> There might are some parts that could improve the RTEMS terms:</p>

<p style="color: #3a383f; margin: 0px 0px 1rem;">There is a statement in the terms that any code submitted to RTEMS is 2 clause BSD. I think if we check the history of RTEMS and libraries, there are a lot of commits from different maintainers (including me) that are 3 clause BSD (libbsd), CC-BY-SA (documentation), some Apache (CMSYS) and so on. So the terms don't match the daily work of the project. The formulation in the DCO is a bit better there and maybe it would be worth adapting the terms. It tells you that the current commit is contributed under the license that is written in the files.</p>

<p style="color: #3a383f; margin: 0px 0px 1rem;">The DCO also has the acknowledgement that all commits are permanently public and your name is visible permanently. There are laws in some countries that would allow a natural person to request deletion of all personal data (like name or mail address) from any organization. The law that I know is the GDPR in Europe. I think the CCPA in California has some similar clauses. Basically with point (d) of DCO, you accept, that this is not possible in an open source project. I know that this is something that should be natural to everyone committing to an open source project. But I had a long discussion with the person responsible for the GDPR in our company a few months back, and I came to the conclusion that a clause like (d) in the DCO is a good idea for any open source project from a legal point of view.</p>
