For this particular application, the main advantage is that the used
LEON2 is free and open source (LGPL). The radiation hard FPGA will
protect the system from most radiation effects, but even if the
system hangs it is not mission critical and can be reset by a
watch-dog or similar. For more info on the LEON processors, you can
