Sorry, but the assumption is wrong.  I have automake 1.10 istalled.  The
automake script automatically routes to the Automake version required.  look at
the following output:

  $automake --version
  automake (GNU automake) 1.10
  Written by Tom Tromey <tromey at redhat.com>
       and Alexandre Duret-Lutz <adl at gnu.org>.
  Copyright 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
  This is free software; see the source for copying conditions.  There is NO
  warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.


  Also, Robert S. Grimes rsg at alum.mit.edu who built the gen405 BSP and   
encourted the same problem had hard-wired his automake to automake-1.10.
