Yes you have provided a good example of why it should be set when
cross-compiling. I must have used it before with embedded arm and coldfire
linux targets and never questioned it working.

Does a reference exist to the Memshield issue ? Google showed me nothing.

I suspect the standard why of setting the execute bit on Windows is supported
by making the file name a.exe (or a.bat ?). Could $ac_exeext be used for the
link tests ? I assume $ac_exeext is being set by a standard autoconf test to
''.
