Firstly, we are talking about automake, not autoconf.
Secondly, I hate these hooks.

The point Sebastian has brought up (again), isn't new. It has been haunting
RTEMS for a very long time and reappears every now and then, whenever somebody
is facing the limitations of this approach.
I recall me having proposed to remove the hooks and to replace them with
scripts, many years ago (probably >> 10 years) and me actually having worked on
them, until something was introduced into RTEMS which broke this approach (I
don't recall what it was).
May-be it's time to revisit this issue once again.
