ROTFL - There is one feature lurking inside of this patch:
You can't remove any make-variable from your Makefile-template system without
introducing backward-compatiblity issue.

To remain backward compatibility, you will have to keep these variables ad
infinitum ;)

Or conversely: If you're breaking backward compatibility by removing "MANAGERS
etc.", we should remove other obsolete variables as well.
