I don't dispute that the sizeof(void *) needs to be addressed but this patch is
orthogonal to this.  It does not add dependencies on that being hard-coded,
conditionally generated, or automagically generated.  In fact, we could get a
complete SMP functional system without addressing that issue.

If someone has a workable solution we can all agree to, then great.  But I
can't see stopping all SMP work just because of one constant.
