I see.  It would be nice if the error message were a bit more clear.

Maybe it'd be a good small project for someone to create medit [-l |
--longword] and friends or, similar to the dump functions, ledit, etc.  Or, if
the user supplies more than 8/16/32 bits, write 16/32/64 bits, resp.
