I have updated !257 to resolve the issues raised in the that MR and bring together the various pieces. Once merged I will update the engineering manual with the documentation added to the `wscript`.

The current VC key interface can remain for RTEMS 6 and be removed in RTEMS 7 as we are close to the 6 release. I have provided the replacement interface to aid migration for those who may depend on the interface. Internally some parts have moved to release label from VC key.
