There are checksums for each release individually. Older releases have md5sum and newer ones have versions of sha. We could add higher-level ones to cover the directories perhaps. Although they would need to be updated occasionally, and currently some of them are broken due to manipulation of the release directories after the release was posted see #107 

I'm not sure what is meant by historical archives though. These are the actual releases, not historical and not archival? Maybe just a wording thing.
