The answer is 6-freebsd-12, but I understand your confusion. If you look at the release downloads, the release tarball that is provided with the release is from the 6-freebsd-12 branch even though it doesn't say it. The 6.1 tag is branched from 6-freebsd-12 and that relationship should be visible if you look at the tag in `git log`.
