Reverting only that part of the change is, of course, possible. It just won't be fun to untangle it and I thought the goal was to reduce future churn across many release cycles for some churn in the 7 release whenever that happens.

I don't understand what you mean by `breaking the promise of compatibility across releases`.

An easier fix (than untangling this patch set) to restore the functionality you're looking for would be to create some stubs in 7/ that point at the new naming scheme so both work. I can manage this today. Untangling completely will have to wait for the weekend.
