@chris @joel any comments or thoughts on this?  Has it been discussed in the past?

I've wanted to move to a vendor-style branch system that FreeBSD uses for a while which would let us precisely track updates and our changes but that doesn't help us here.  Having 3rd party code littered throughout isn't easy to handle I understand why it is that way and I'm not suggesting we change it just moving to something a little different to better identify what's 3rd party.
