@gedare The removal of the FREEBSD tag in the file was an accident, a result of copy-paste errors. I've already been working on fixing all of that before the other commits will be made. 

I'm not sure how you would want to go about staying as close to upstream as possible while also maintaining the compatibility with existing apps and APIs. I'm open to suggestions about how to accomplish this, if what you're thinking is different that what I've already been working on.
