I'm not so sure about your legal statement here because, at the end of the day you're going to have to prove the person sitting on the other side of that text name is who they say they are.  Which is why a move to signed commits is better as it requires you to unlock your key before you sign.  There are no text statements here but we know that whoever added that commit was able to unlock their key and sign it.  That's far more useful to us as a project and something we will move to down the road.
