I get good results for the zynqmp with `shift=N` up to `9` and then the failures start again at `10`. I think the `auto` just does something too aggressive.

With riscv, I get good results at `9` also. I would set this to some fixed amount. I don't see a huge difference in runtime performance between `5` and `9`. I will set it to 5 for now as a heuristic.
