I propose to keep `_clang-format` in the tree. Most of `cpukit` and the test suites follow this style. The specification export and the contributors read it from the tree.
clang-format 18 and later has a standard way to exclude files: a `.clang-format-ignore` file with path patterns. !1531 adds such a file next to `_clang-format`. It excludes the imported code, the BSPs except SPARC and GRLIB, and the parts of `cpukit` which do not follow the conventions. A run of clang-format from the top directory then changes 272 sources instead of 4457. Together with !1509 and !1511 it changes 44 sources, which drifted from the style after the reformat.
Does !1531 solve the problem which you saw? If not, please name the files which clang-format formatted unexpectedly.
