Framebuffer driver question

What resolutions is this for? Is this VESA or simply 640x480x16
VGA?

I am not a graphics expert so you will have to educate me
why they have deprecated it.

As a code basis for building it up to the Cirrus driver, it is
a good thing to use if the license is OK.
