No, I wouldn't expect that. The driver is definitely broken on the MPC5554.  There is a newer driver in rtems-libbsd with a FreeBSD copyright dated between 2006 and 2008:

This is the new stack, correct?  That driver is what I was thinking of looking at porting to the old stack.  I will spend some time trying to figure out what's up with the current driver.
