Each project is different and will require a different set of skills.
The most important skills are communication and persistence! Try to
find a project (or a few) that fits your interests, and then work with
potential mentors to scope it to your abilities.
As for general background, you should definitely be familiar with C.
If you're not, there are lots of nice tutorials out there, like
"Essential C" from http://cslibrary.stanford.edu/ The other things you
should do are to thoroughly read all the material on the RTEMS SOC
page, and also on Google's FAQ in Melange, so that you are familiar
with all aspects of the GSoC program.
After you get hello world to work, and make your change, you might
like to try running some other samples, or build RTEMS for a different
CPU and BSP (with a simulator is best to test.) This is especially
important if you intend to work with RTEMS on a particular BSP other
than sparc/sis.
