This was present when we had no branching in the repo to help manage 
incompatible differences. We tend to manage variations conditionally 
these days and this is a better approach so the need for the number is 
questionable. It you think there is value in removing the number please 
do so. I am not sure about partial removal, it may just make things 
confusing.
