reference in C++ vs. EC++ discussion

Some months ago, I asked about EC++ support in gcc.  I was convinced that it 
was unnecessary, but I saw the same question come up relatively recently.
I came across a link by Bjarne Stroustroup that discusses the very issue, 
including timing numbers of equivalent C and C++ code.
