console input/output

We're having a problem whereby if we try and output a large buffer and then
wait for input using getchar, only part of the buffer is output initially.
If we use 'cin' for input all the buffer is output but we lose the <CR> we
want. I'd like to use the low level I/O functions but the read seems to
depend on an initialised record being passed which the caller hasn't got
visibility of. Any clues ?
