PPPD Write Performance Question

Hi,
I have a simple pppd test program but I am seeing some
performance problems when I write out a large buffer 
of data.  My test program does the following things:
 1) makes 57600 pppd connection over a direct serial link
 2) opens up a socket in blocking mode
 3) trys to write out 8K of data

Right now it is taking about 10 seconds for all the data 
to be received on the other side.  Has anyone seen this
problem before?  I will gladly post the test code if
it would help find a solution.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.
