i386ex: hangups during initialization

The fault did not occur when I had the CONFIGURE_MICROSECONDS_PER_TICK set to
5000 even before the soft float was fixed, i.e. the fault only occurred with me
when it was set to 1000. When the toolset was upgraded, I was able to set it to
1000 without crashing. I doubt that it had anything to do with an fp instruction
