Cygwin/win98/gcc-3.2.3 problem fixed

Or at least worked around...

It turns out there is a bug (either in Cygwin 1.3.22 or in win98) 
which causes mmap() to behave incorrectly on some (but not all)
win98 machines.  The workaround is to specify '--with-gc=simple'
when configuring the gcc build.  This results in a compiler which 
is epsilon slower than before, but will now work on win98.
