I think it's a matter of GIGO (garbage in, garbage out): the debugger is
using existing debugging information from the executable file.

you didn't mention what version of GCC you were using.  I personally had
occational debugging-related problems with gcc 3.2.1 which seem to have
been fixed in the CVS gcc-3_2-branch (which will become 3.2.3).  you
might want to try updating your gcc.
