uart on pc386

hi,
could anyone pls tell me what the recommended way is for switching to 
polling mode for com2?

i tried BSP_uart_intr_ctrl(BSP_UART_COM2, BSP_UART_INTR_CTRL_DISABLE);
but this doesnt seem to have any effect.

second: do i understand it right that when irqs are disable the internal
uart fifo is disable too? - no buffering just reading one byte in polled
mode ?
