So you did or did not see it work from CVS (at any time) with gcc 4.0.x?

If I had to guess on Solaris, I would say it is a shell or m4 
deficiency. Solaris is notorious for having natively provided tools that 
are not robust enough to make autotools happy.

You could try installing GNU m4 and putting that directory 1st in your path.
