The situation at Angelo's setup is a bit different: He has NO drive
attached to the primary interface, you are talking about installations,
where at least one drive is attached to each interface. Due to the
"master-slave" operation defined for IDE, this is a big difference.

But nevertheless I agree, the ATA and/or IDE driver might be more
intelligent, although I really have no clue how this can be done...
