Problems connecting two embedded boards running RTEMS

I have a direct connection between the RTEMS computers. I am using a cross-cable for connecting the boards together. The idea of using Ethereal is a good one. Any other thoughts of the possible cause of the problem?

Are you running through a switch? If you're connecting directly, do you
need a swap cable? (Perhaps your Linux box can perform an auto-crossover
on it's PHY but your RTEMS computers can't).
