accessing the serial device

Hello Hank,

it is a bit difficult to answer your question, when you do not give any
information about the board/hardware/BSP you want to use.

What kind of FPGA baords are you using/which processor and peripherals
are implemented in the FPGAs? Is it a PPC/virtex/ an Altera/NIOS? A LEONx?

When you have identified your hardware, you might also want to look into
the respective console driver of the BSP you are using.
