For the Debian project is that a relevant project to be working on this
summer, since there is a mention in the description that there is no
Debian machine to keep on doing new package releases in the future? or
is it a situation where since there is no Debian packages there is no
need for a Debian machine and once someone starts working on it, there
are plans to set one up?

For the Java port, what type of skill set/experience would be expected
for a student coming into working on this to be able to reasonably
complete it this summer?
