I'm also using an MPC55XXEVB derived BSP.  Bug 1443 is still open (PowerPC in_cksum() requires optimization).  Did you try with and without optimization?  

I'm using a checksum derived from netBSD.  I've attached the file to the bug report.  I haven't built real recently so beware.
