problem linking pthreads

If I want to gcc links against pthread (i.e -lpthread), should I
mandatorily use the "--enable-threads=POSIX" when configuring gcc? I've
used "--enable-threads=rtems" for another project and I cannot find
libpthread.a nor libpthread.so..
