GSOC13 Projects query

I've added myself to the list and was going through the list of projects but I'm finding them hard to understand as I've no prior experience with embedded systems and POSIX.
I'm a sophomore in Bachelors in Computer Science and have studied the basic Computer Architecture and Data Structures course and am well versed in C++ and C.I haven't done much system programming though.I do take part in algorithm competitions regularly on websites like www.codechef.com www.hackerrank.com
Could you please help me with the dilemma?
