The ACT led (which would be used to indicate SD card activity) is 
hardwired to GPIO 16, so you may be able to use it (it works on my model 
B), otherwise you need to use an external LED.
The other board LEDs are hardwired either to the power supply (unusable) 
or the ethernet/usb chip.
