I also applied the patch at home last night and was happy with the build.  I
did see some printf format warnings and I am sure it tripped more I didn't see.

I had a couple of nits but can fix those after you commit.

+ no .cvsignore
+ a bit of formatting in the ChangeLog 2nd entry I think

Since you have the code in your tree and mine is at home.  Feel free to commit 
this.

Then we can move on to reviewing the next part.  Better to see the 
entire package as is and fix it than to start hacking on unmerged code.
