I don't know if he is currently being paid to do this development work by
ATMEL. I know that he works at ATMEL, and that much of this development work
was done by him in the distant past. I suspect WinAVR, which AVR-LibC is
packaged in, was funded by ATMEL in the past.
FWIW, ATMEL is not a software vendor primarily, but a hardware vendor. My
understanding is they were interested in getting the patches up-streamed in the
past...

I'm not sure. I didn't look at avr-ada that closely, but from what I saw it
looked like a small group of enthusiasts, and hobbyists. My main reason for
looking into avr-ada was that on avr-freaks (the avr community page) whenever
RTEMS is mentioned, avr-ada is the suggested alternative.
