You're not too late. We don't think the SMP support (broadly speaking)
is suitable for GSoC projects at this time. There might be some
specific aspects, such as SMP support for a particular platform, that
you could undertake. Another project that may be suitable and timely
could be to work on improving the newly submitted drvmgr code, this is
listed as "Merge Leon", and there remains quite a few open problems to
solve. There was an email thread on this (subject: [PATCH 000/111]
GRLIB/LEON RTEMS RCC patches)

Regardless, you should begin by going through our GSoC Getting Started
Guide, that will familiarize you with building and running RTEMS in a
simulator. Then, if the project you choose will use a particular
target BSP, you should build tools for it and be able to demo it. You
should get a reference letter from someone with KDE as well to
strengthen your application. Feel free to ask questions here, and on
IRC you may occasionally get some interactive discussions.
