It is older than gcc. As far as I can tell, it is from the original BSD
TCP/IP headers
and is still around.

It is not in POSIX as best I can tell.

defacto = ancient BSD and common.

__BYTE_ORDER__ appears to be defined by gcc in some cases. I checked
our powerpc and i386 gcc's but my native gcc 4.4.7 didn't define anything
related
to endianness that I spotted.
