At least on Qemu it used to work with SMP enabled some time ago. With
the latest Qemu the BSP starts (with SMP enabled), but the timecounter
seems not to work:

qemu-system-sparc -no-reboot -nographic -M leon3_generic -m 64M -kernel
./sparc-rtems5/c/leon3/testsuites/samples/ticker.exe

A SMP enabled BSP should work also on systems with only one processor
provided you use the right instruction set. I use for example the erc32
BSP with SMP enabled all the time for RTEMS development.
