I would recommend perusing www.embedded.com and reading some 
articles from Embedded Systems Programming.  Unfortunately,
they do not have all of ESP's back content online but they
do have a CD with all issues from 1988-present for US$79.

I personally like Andy Wellings' books but the ones I have are
Ada programming books.  The book Concurrency in Ada is a 
book I look to for unusual concurrency constructs.  The logic
is the same even if the example code is in Ada.

Galmeister's POSIX Programming in the Real World is a nice book
on POSIX real-time programming.

Every book I know of has some drawback. :(
