cannot create executables

This is likely a stupid problem with my installation....but I can't see it yet.
bit ran to completion building the tools.
Shortly after starting bit_rtems, I got 'cannot create executables'. From the log:

Could not successfully configure into build-powerpc-rtems!
This is all with the fresh new 4.5.0beta3 sources building under SunOS5.6.
Any help appreciated.
