printf not working on Zynq standalone build of examples-v2/hello/ [but printk does]

I have noticed that if I build the examples-v2/hello/ within an RTEMS bsp build it works fine, but if I build it standalone worth its own makefile (from Makefile.leaf)
It doesn't give any output. However if  I substitute printk instead it does work. Is this perhaps an issue with interrupts? Does printf work on the Zynq
