Another issue is that full support for the Smrnmi extension was only added in July 2025 in GCC: https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2025-July/690523.html

Meaning the `mnret` instruction is not available to us (a workaround is to use the raw opcode instead `.word 0x70200073`). The other CSRs related to the extension can still be used.
