Strange error while building binutils

If I recall correctly, gcc 3.4 was the first gcc release series to 
tighten up
pointer checks.  binutils 2.13.2.1 is older than gcc 3.4 and probably
has numerous places gcc doesn't like.  I know for the Linux binaries,
they are built on a chroot'ed RH73 environment.
