Not sure what you mean by auto-update.
There isn't really such a thing. Unless you "cron" it. (or maybe some fancy GUI applet for the desktop, which may not work exactly)
Backup your sources.list file and then change it to use the "stable" version.
You probably have a release name (eg, potato, woody) in your sources.list

After that update your list of available packages and then upgrade your system.
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-apt-get.en.html#s-dist-upgrade
And backup your data before the upgrade! :)
There is always the slight chance things don't go the way you expect them.
